Let them eat croissants: French-style bakeries pop up from Gurgaon to Goa

‘Who would have thought that a boutique patisserie like ours would end up selling 250-280 croissants on a good day… and, touchwood, there have been only good days,” smiles Sahil Mehta, one of the country’s top pastry chefs who opened L’Opera in Delhi and has set up and turned around many bakeries. Last year, Mehta and his wife Surbhi then went on to set up Paris My Love, their own venture, out of their apartment. However, as demand for what they had thought of as their niche cakes and bakes—which include French Galette des Rois (king’s cake), Mehta’s trademark almond croissants, macarons and Macbeths— shot up, they rented a larger kitchen space in south Delhi this year.
