This day in history

1867 Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel was granted a patent for dynamite on May 7, 1867.

The invention allowed for the high explosive nitroglycerine to be transported with greater stability.

The invention made him very rich, though dynamite would later become a powerful weapon of war.

When his brother died, several newspapers mistakenly published obituaries of him.

Nobel was horrified at how he was described.

“Dr Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday,” one obituary read.

Nobel bequeathed his fortune to a committee awarding prizes for the betterment of society.

The Nobel Prizes honour physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.
