Matthijs de Ligt responds to Man Utd interest with Bayern Munich future in doubt

Matthijs de Ligt is open to leaving Bayern Munich this summer with Manchester United reigniting their interest in the defender.

The Netherlands international was one of the stars of Erik ten Hag’s Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-final in 2019, joining Juventus later that year.

Ten Hag was thought to be keen to sign the centre-half following his arrival at United in 2022 only for de Ligt to join Bayern.

With United looking to bring in a new long-term option at the back this summer, de Ligt is again a target for the Premier League side.

Their hopes of luring him to Old Trafford have been boosted by reports claiming the 24-year-old is not happy with his current role at Bayern and will consider a move away at the end of the season.

De Ligt has started just four league matches this season, currently third choice with Dayot Upamecano and Kim min-Jae Thomas Tuchel’s preferred partnership at the back.

Bayern’s interest in signing Barcelona star Ronald Araujo could see him fall further down the pecking order were Bayern to sign the Uruguay international later this year.

De Ligt is among Bayern’s top earners with Sky Germany reporting he is likely to leave this summer should the right offer come in.

United are monitoring any developments over his future.

De Ligt suffered a knee injury during Bayern’s winter training camp in Portugal but will be available for the game against Werder Bremen on Sunday.
