Managerless Motherwell bounced back from European misery to stun dominant St Mirren and launch their Scottish Premiership season with victory.

Kevin van Veen’s penalty on the stroke of half-time proved decisive for the visitors, who parted with boss Graham Alexander after the Europa Conference qualifying exit to Sligo Rovers.

St Mirren could find no way past inspired goalkeeper Liam Kelly with several sublime stops, and Motherwell clung on despite losing Ricki Lamie to a late red card.
