As Wimbledon got under way on Monday, data analysts supporting the world’s top players were also hard at work.

Nowadays their practice is widespread in elite tennis. Some players pay lucrative sums to specialist companies and the quest for any kind of edge is intense.

But compared to other major sports such as baseball or football this has all happened relatively late – despite the first documented tennis data analysis dating back almost 130 years.
