I point this out with truly no judgment: Kim Kardashian is the only KarJenner (besides Kris) who married the other parent of her children. Kourtney, Khloé, Kylie Jenner and even Rob were all in partnerships when they became parents. And actually, Kim and Kanye already had North when they tied the knot. And listen, honestly, whatever works! But the family’s take-it-or-leave-it stance on the institute of marriage is an interesting backdrop to Kylie’s comment that she wanted to be “wifey” vibes for her partner and the father of her two children, rapper Travis Scott. Is this a hint, or just a saying?
On the season finale of Hulu’s The Kardashians, Jenner and her stylists look through gown options for the upcoming Billboard Awards. She tells her team that she isn’t “performing” at the awards, which I genuinely can’t tell if that’s a deadpan joke or not. Does she mean she’s not presenting an award? Does Kylie…perform? Anyway, she says she’s “just going to support Trav.”
After picking out a dress she likes, she tells the camera, “I’m really going for like, supportive wifey vibes. Not really like the star of the night tonight.” I’m not even interested in whether or not she and Trav are gonna tie the knot, I’m more fascinated by the way the KarJenners represent an evolution of the nuclear family, at once traditional and in some ways conservative but entirely independent of the state. Their partners burnish their legacies and further the dynasty, even help grow the empire, but they are not legally part of the family. California is a community property law state; anything you earn or acquire during the marriage gets split in half if you divorce, and you know Kris isn’t letting Scott take half her daughter’s lip kit empire were anything to happen.
Here’s the wifey vibes dress, BTW:
Yet relationships are central to the KarJenner mythology and storyline. Perhaps Kylie Jenner summed up these and other contradictions of the female experience best when she said, “I’m still a mom, but I’m also so young. These are the years that I’m supposed to be naked. Everywhere. In the streets. On a beach somewhere, with my titties out. Ass out. Fuck yeah.” She’s funny! Who knew?
