Nigeria’s official exchange rate fell to N1,600 per US dollar on April 4, 2025, marking a 1.9% depreciation from the previous day’s rate of N1,569. This is the weakest position the naira has recorded since December 4, 2024, when it hit N1,608 to the dollar.

The decline comes as global markets react to new 14% tariffs introduced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which have triggered uncertainty in emerging economies. Analysts say the naira’s recent volatility is being driven by reduced investor confidence and increased demand for the dollar.
