Sowore defies Police warning, vows April 7 protest will proceed

“Regardless, tomorrow’s protest must go on across Nigeria. Nothing can stop the movement of the people!”

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has forcefully rejected claims by the Nigeria Police Force that his planned nationwide protest on Monday is intended to undermine National Police Day celebrations. In a strongly-worded post on his verified Facebook page Sunday, Sowore accused the police leadership of using diversionary tactics to shield Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun from scrutiny.

“It is the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of ILLEGAL Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, that should reconsider their program,” Sowore wrote. “No amount of such initiatives can save Egbetokun from the controversy surrounding his illegal, unjust, and scandalous appointment by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The fiery activist demanded Egbetokun’s immediate retirement, arguing that the IGP had exceeded the standard 35-year service period. “Nigeria needs a new police force, not one headed by a spent force IGP utilising diversionary tactics to shift public attention from his shortcomings and scandals,” he stated.

Undeterred by police warnings, Sowore insisted the April 7 protest organized by his ‘Take It Back’ movement would proceed as planned across Nigeria. “Regardless, tomorrow’s protest must go on across Nigeria. Nothing can stop the movement of the people!” he declared.

This marks the latest confrontation between Sowore and authorities, following his history of organizing demonstrations against government policies. Police officials have not yet responded to Sowore’s latest comments as tensions escalate ahead of Monday’s planned protests.
