The Nigerian Bar Association has stepped into the six-year-long detention of 15 former domestic workers of ex-First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, over alleged theft of jewellery and household items.
Detained since 2019 in Bayelsa’s Okaka Custodial Centre, the workers face 18 charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery.
A top NBA official disclosed, “We have reached out to the former first lady… and the Attorney General of Bayelsa State.”
The official said delays stemmed from a trial-within-trial process and multiple legal teams. One defendant reportedly gave birth in custody, further stalling proceedings. “We will continue to speak with the parties,” the NBA official added.
Meanwhile, the prison controller allegedly warned inmates not to share information. “He said the action would worsen their case,” a source said.
One defendant denied that pregnancy was a delaying factor, citing bail for the sickle cell patient involved.
The sister of a detainee also revealed her sibling’s husband divorced her while she remained in prison.
