A senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that over 50 countries have contacted the White House to renegotiate tariffs following Trump’s announcement of a new global tariff regime.
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, speaking on ABC’s This Week, said the tariffs have spurred trade talks, with chip-making Taiwan advocating for zero tariffs.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed similar sentiments on NBC’s Meet the Press.
Hassett dismissed concerns about domestic price hikes, stating, “I don’t think that you’re going to see a big effect on the consumer in the US.” He also refuted claims that Trump’s tariffs aimed to crash markets to pressure the Federal Reserve, insisting there would be no “political coercion” of the central bank. Despite this, U.S. stocks dropped 10% after the tariff news, amid a conflicting Trump Truth Social post.
