The Rivers State Police Command has denied reports alleging it attacked members of the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement protesting against the Cybercrime Act and economic hardship. In a statement issued hours after the protest, police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that no teargas was fired at the demonstrators.
She explained that officers were deployed to the scene based on intelligence reports and only intervened to disperse individuals allegedly attempting to steal from the crowd. “A group of miscreants was observed engaging in criminal acts, including theft of mobile phones and other valuables from unsuspecting members of the public,” she said.
Iringe-Koko emphasized that the claims of police brutality were unfounded and designed to incite public unrest. The police, she said, acted within the bounds of their duties to maintain order and protect citizens.
She assured that the command remains committed to safeguarding the rights of all lawful protesters.
