The Republican budget debate returns to the House this week, following last week’s tumultuous standoff that forced Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to send lawmakers home. The House plans to address the budget resolution amended by the Senate, pending operational status on the floor.

The internal conflict centered on leadership’s attempt to block Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., from proposing a proxy voting measure for new parents. “Speaker Johnson and I have reached an agreement and are formalizing a procedure called ‘live/dead pairing’,” Luna announced on X. This historic procedure allows members to cancel out missed votes.

Meanwhile, House leadership urged colleagues to adopt the Senate’s budget resolution, stating, “The House will NOT accept nor participate in an ‘us versus them’ process resulting in a take it or leave it proposition from the Senate.”

As the House agenda resumes, Congress will also process key nominations in the Senate.
