U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he would like the war in Gaza to stop, as he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Trump emphasized ongoing efforts to free hostages held by Hamas, calling it “a long process.”
“I’d like to see the war stop, and I think the war will stop at some point, that won’t be in the too-distant future,” Trump said when asked about his campaign promise to end the war.
Israel launched the offensive after Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Since then, more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to local health authorities in Gaza.
Trump’s comments come amid rising global calls for a ceasefire and growing concern over civilian casualties in the prolonged conflict.
