The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned Nigerian hip-hop artiste Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest protest song, Tell Your Papa, from being aired on radio and television. In a statement issued by the commission, the track was deemed “unfit for broadcast” due to its “politically provocative” content, which allegedly violates sections of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
“The lyrics are considered to be politically charged and in violation of broadcast codes,” NBC stated. The song, which criticizes the government’s handling of economic and social issues, has sparked reactions across social media. Abdulkareem, known for his activism through music, has defended the song, saying it reflects the frustrations of everyday Nigerians.
“This is not just a song, it’s the voice of the people,” he said. The ban has ignited a fresh debate about censorship and freedom of expression in Nigeria’s creative industry, with artists and civil rights groups calling for more tolerance of dissent in artistic work.
