Atiku Abubakar’s call for a coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections faces opposition as key parties pursue independent strategies.
Opposition parties in Nigeria are navigating complex dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s initiative to form a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has encountered resistance from major opposition parties.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed its intent to independently contest the elections, emphasizing its readiness to provide alternative governance. The party stated, “We are ready to rescue Nigeria’s democracy in the 2027 election.”
Similarly, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent defection to the SDP as part of a broader political strategy involving Atiku. Buba Galadima, a prominent NNPP figure, alleged that El-Rufai’s move was intended to position Atiku favorably within the SDP, should he be denied the PDP’s presidential ticket.
These developments highlight the fragmented nature of opposition politics in Nigeria as parties strategize for the upcoming elections.
