Estonia detained the oil tanker Kiwala, a vessel linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which is used to export crude oil and oil products to third countries, on the morning of 11 April.
On April 11, 2025, the Estonian Navy detained the oil tanker Kiwala, associated with Russia’s shadow fleet used to export oil products to third countries. The operation commenced at 03:00, involving a helicopter, and by 04:19, Kiwala entered Estonian waters, escorted by two naval vessels.
The tanker, previously sanctioned by the EU, was en route to Russia’s Ust-Luga port. It carries a crew of 24, with the Chinese captain currently cooperating with authorities. This action aligns with the EU’s ongoing efforts to target Russia’s shadow fleet amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
