The Premier League has announced the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), set to debut on Saturday, April 12. The system, which has undergone extensive non-live testing in league matches and live trials during the FA Cup, is designed to support VAR officials in making more accurate and efficient offside decisions.
According to the league, SAOT “automates key elements of the offside decision-making process for the VAR and will be used in close offside calls.” It is intended to either confirm the on-field referee’s decision or recommend a change when necessary.
The new technology uses multiple camera angles and AI-powered tracking to deliver quicker and more consistent rulings.
The Premier League added, “The technology helps enhance the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making.”
