Nigerian Army worried as South East youths shun recruitment, launches sensitisation drive

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern that youths from the South East are shunning recruitment into the army, highlighting the need for sensitisation.

The Nigerian Army has raised concerns over low recruitment turnout from the South East, urging youths to utilise allocated slots. Brigadier General Chima Ekeator, leader of the 2025 recruitment awareness team, disclosed this during a visit to Abia State Governor, noting that last year, Abia filled only 53 of 200 slots. Similar trends were observed across the region.  

Brigadier General Chima Ekeator, leading the Nigerian Army’s recruitment sensitisation team, expressed worry over the South East’s underrepresentation in enlistment exercises. Speaking in Umuahia, he revealed that despite allocated slots, applicants from the region were few, citing Abia’s 53 recruits out of 200 slots in 2024. “The leadership observed this gap and directed sensitisation efforts,” he said, urging traditional rulers and mayors to mobilise youths.
