Panic as Lagos braces for worst floods in years

An uneasy calm hangs over Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, particularly on the Island, as residents brace for what experts predict could be one of the worst flood seasons in recent years.

Lagos residents are on high alert as experts warn of potentially devastating floods in the coming months. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) listed the city among high-risk areas in its 2025 Annual Flood Outlook, citing heavy rainfall, rising sea levels, and inadequate drainage. Water Resources Minister Prof. Joseph Utsev urged vulnerable communities—including Lagos Island, Lekki, and Victoria Island—to prepare for severe flooding.

The looming crisis revives painful memories of past disasters, particularly the 2012 floods that submerged major roads like Ahmadu Bello Way and Marina, crippling businesses and displacing families. With the city’s drainage systems overwhelmed, authorities face mounting pressure to act before the rains intensify.
