Hospital sources told SaharaReporters that the admission has not gone down well with staff members, many of whom had already been grumbling over deteriorating working conditions, poor patient care, and what they describe as years of opaque financial dealings by the MD.
Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, has confessed to reallocating funds meant for patients’ meals and medication to settle soaring electricity and diesel bills. In leaked audio obtained by SaharaReporters, Owoeye defended the move, citing monthly power costs of N58 million against a government allocation of just N23 million. “We combine gains from drugs and patients’ food to pay these bills,” he admitted during a staff meeting. The revelation has sparked outrage among workers, who accuse him of financial mismanagement amid deteriorating patient care.
Despite receiving N686 million between 2024 and 2025, the hospital grapples with dilapidated infrastructure and shortages. A staff member disclosed: “He claims no funds were released, yet patients starve.” Owoeye also confirmed owning a private hospital nearby, fueling suspicions of conflict of interest. A coalition has petitioned anti-graft agencies, alleging systemic corruption, including the botched demolition of the outpatient clinic and unpaid suppliers.
