A vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has allegedly killed a seven-year-old girl, Saratu Lawal, in Akure, Ondo State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, April 17, in the Oba Ile area while the First Lady was en route from the airport to the venue of her official engagement. She was in the state to launch the South-West phase of the Renewed Hope Initiative, aimed at supporting women and girls nationwide. The event also included the distribution of over 10,000 professional kits to nurses and midwives.

Multiple sources confirmed to SaharaReporters that Saratu, a pupil of Islamiyar Arabic School in Shasha, was struck by a butter-coloured Hilux vehicle within the First Lady’s convoy.

“A seven years old girl by name Saratu Lawal… was knocked down by a butter coloured Hilux in the government convoy of her Excellency… in Oba Ile, before the Oba Ile Central Mosque,” a source said.

Efforts to save the child reportedly failed, even after she was rushed to a nearby primary healthcare centre.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, the girl’s father, Malam Lawali, a trader at Oba Ile market, said he had “handed everything to God.”

The child’s remains have been released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olushola, were unsuccessful. Calls were not answered, and a text message had not been responded to at the time of filing this report.
