“I wonder because there might be a backlash against how good he was and how much humility he had compared to some of the leaders in this world right now, so there might be a backlash to it, and they’ll get some conservative guy in there who, you know, is anti-gay and everything else,” Behar said.

Joy Behar, co-host of The View, expressed concern Tuesday that Pope Francis may be succeeded by a more conservative figure following his recent death.

“I wonder because there might be a backlash against how good he was and how much humility he had compared to some of the leaders in this world right now,” Behar said. “So there might be a backlash to it, and they’ll get some conservative guy in there who, you know, is anti-gay and everything else.”

Pope Francis, who passed away Monday morning, was known for his emphasis on humility and inclusion. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.

Co-host Sunny Hostin shared her appreciation for Francis, saying, “This pope changed things for me.” She quoted him from a 60 Minutes interview: “The globalization of indifference is a very ugly disease.”

Whoopi Goldberg recalled meeting the Pope in 2023 and praised him for welcoming comedians and embracing all people: “He is exactly what I hoped he would be.”
