A 31-year-old man has gone on trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, accused of seriously injuring his five-month-old daughter.
The child, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was brought to Cork University Hospital on January 4, 2021, with bleeding on the brain, a fractured collarbone, and multiple bruises.
Prosecutor Jane Hyland told the jury that the injuries included bruises to the face, stomach, buttocks, and deep tissue damage under the spine. A crèche worker had earlier spotted bruising on the child in December 2020.
A consultant ophthalmologist, Dr Sarah Moran, described “extensive haemorrhage” in both eyes, saying the damage was “highly suggestive” of shaken baby syndrome. “There is no way that the vision from the centre of the eye was not affected,” she said.
The accused initially told a social worker he had dropped the baby, later allegedly admitting to shaking her. He denies all charges.
The trial continues before Judge Dermot Sheehan.
