Obi to Critics: Telling the truth is not de-marketing Nigeria

Obi warned against politicising national truths, saying, “When we weaponise the truth for political convenience, we dishonour our heroes.”

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his candid comments on Nigeria’s current realities, saying truth-telling is vital to national progress.

In a post on X on Thursday, Obi dismissed accusations—implicitly directed at him by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu—that he was de-marketing Nigeria abroad. “Truth does not in any way de-market a nation. Rather, it refines and strengthens it,” Obi stated.

Speaking after attending a memorial for Chief Edwin Clark, Obi criticised rising insecurity, poverty, and institutional decay. He also questioned the silence of once-vocal protesters from 2012-2013, asking, “Where are those who called President Jonathan ‘clueless’ when prices were manageable?”

Obi warned against politicising national truths, saying, “When we weaponise the truth for political convenience, we dishonour our heroes.” He added that Nigeria must serve all citizens—not just the elite.

Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier criticised Obi’s comments at Johns Hopkins Univ

ersity as “disparaging.”
