FIFA has announced the expansion of the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting from the 2031 edition.

The FIFA Council unanimously approved the expansion during a virtual meeting. The new format will feature 12 groups, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the expansion will provide more opportunities for countries to develop women’s football. “This is not just about having 16 more teams playing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup but taking the next steps in relation to the women’s game in general,” he said.

The US is expected to host the 2031 tournament, while the UK is the sole bidder for the 2035 edition.
