The PDP says it will take legal action against its lawmakers who recently defected to the APC, insisting their seats must be vacated.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to challenge the recent defection of its lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in court, citing constitutional grounds.
A senior party official told Saturday Tribune that “there was no division in the party to warrant the defections,” adding that the party has activated Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution to pursue the cases legally.
This comes as all three PDP senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—defected to the APC following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
The PDP National Working Committee, led by Acting Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, has condemned the defections as “a betrayal of the people’s mandate” and promised to “reclaim its lost ground.”
Meanwhile, APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje assured that the party will smoothly integrate the defectors. “We are not imposing a one-party state… but if Nigerians choose that path, it’s democracy at work,” he said.
