Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi says Nigeria has not started extradition proceedings against Simon Ekpa, who faces trial in Finland for spreading terrorist propaganda.
Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, says the federal government has not commenced extradition proceedings against Simon Ekpa, a Biafra separatist currently facing trial in Finland.
Fagbemi made the clarification following reports that misquoted him as confirming the start of extradition efforts.
A statement by his media aide, Kamarudeen Ogundele, said: “The report is untrue and a complete departure from what the AGF said at the Stakeholders/Citizen Engagement Forum.”
“Ekpa, a leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently standing trial in Finland for charges filed against him by the Finnish government,” the statement noted.
“To set the record straight, what the AGF said… was that the Nigerian government had been engaging with Finnish authorities to ensure that Simon Ekpa is held accountable for his actions.”
Ekpa, arrested in November 2024, is accused of spreading terrorist propaganda in 2021 and inciting violence in Nigeria’s southeast via social media. His trial is set for June 2025.
