A routine traffic stop in Georgia has led to the arrest and deportation proceedings of a college student and her family, who have been living illegally in the U.S. since 2010.

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, a Dalton State student, faces deportation after she was pulled over in Dalton, Georgia, for ignoring a “no turn on red” sign on May 5. Police discovered she had no license and had been in the U.S. illegally since age four.

Her arrest revealed that her entire family—undocumented immigrants from Mexico—had been living in the U.S. for nearly 15 years. Arias-Cristobal was taken to Whitfield County Jail, a partner of ICE’s 287(G) program, and later transferred to Stewart Detention Center, where her father, Jose Arias-Tovar, is also being held.

“My dad has his own company… they hadn’t hit that status to get [a visa] yet,” her sister told WTVC.

Immigration attorney Terry Olsen criticized ICE’s approach: “This is a civil rights issue.”

The family faces imminent deportation. Arias-Cristobal’s employer started a GoFundMe for legal aid.

“She was not eligible for DACA,” said Hannah Jones, a former employer who is supporting her case.
