Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz will declare a national emergency to address rising illegal migration, Die Welt reported Thursday. Elected on Tuesday, Merz announced that his government would begin turning back illegal migrants at the border, invoking Article 72 of the TFEU to prioritize national security over EU regulations. Germany, which received over 237,000 asylum applications last year, remains the EU’s top destination for asylum seekers.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said: “We will control the borders more strictly,” leading to “a higher number of rejections.” He added, “The policy in Germany has changed.”

A letter seen by Bild showed Dobrindt instructing police to ignore a 2015 Merkel-era directive that opened Germany’s doors to over a million refugees.
