Piwuna, who also serves as Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.
Piwuna, who also serves as Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The decision was reached at the Union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin on Sunday.
According to sources, the election was closely contested between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauch.
Piwuna assumes leadership amid growing unease in the university sector, with concerns over the Federal Government’s disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances, persistent brain drain, and mounting speculation of fresh industrial action.
The Union has yet to issue an official statement on the direction of its new leadership, but observers expect continuity in ASUU’s long-standing demands for improved university funding and academic welfare.
