Obi has accepted to be Atiku’s running mate, and Atiku has also agreed to serve a single term…”
There are strong indications that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered ex-Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the vice-presidential slot in a proposed one-term joint ticket for the 2027 general election.
Multiple sources told The PUNCH that Atiku and Obi began coalition talks earlier this year in the UK. Atiku reportedly committed to a single four-year term, promising to hand over to Obi in 2031.
A source said, “Obi has accepted to be Atiku’s running mate, and Atiku has also agreed to serve a single term… They have both agreed to sign a written agreement if necessary.”
However, Obi is said to be consulting key loyalists, with internal crises plaguing both LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The duo is reportedly considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a fallback platform.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, said, “I cannot speak on the specific agreement… both of them are focused on ensuring a viable coalition.”
Obi allies remain tight-lipped. Coalition discussions continue as the ADC confirms ongoing talks with major stakeholders.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders like Diran Odeyemi have advised Atiku to drop his ambition, insisting, “Atiku is not Abraham Lincoln… his time has passed.”
