The Lagos State Government says it plans to raise over N3 trillion through public-private partnerships (PPP) to combat escalating coastal erosion along its 180km shoreline.
Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Ekundayo Alebiosu, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa, Ikeja. He noted the use of groynes—shoreline structures that prevent erosion—is effective but financially demanding.
“It costs a huge amount to construct a single groyne… the projected cost exceeds N3 trillion, a figure that makes it clear that strategic collaboration is required,” Alebiosu said.
He recently led a delegation to the Netherlands to explore international coastal protection models. Stressing that erosion is a national concern, he called for federal and private sector support.
“This is not just a Lagos problem, it is a national environmental and economic challenge,” he said.
The initiative aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader development agenda to protect assets and unlock Lagos’ waterfront economy, Alebiosu added, reaffirming a commitment to climate-resilient, long-term solutions.
