Many observers are now questioning the motives behind the wave of cross-carpeting, especially amid worsening economic conditions.
ABUJA — A wave of high-profile defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is sweeping through Nigeria’s political space, reportedly spurred by lofty promises allegedly made by the Presidency and APC national headquarters. Though defectors often cite internal crises or support for the Tinubu administration, Daily Trust learnt from multiple sources that enticing offers were made to secure their defection.
Despite Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, including fuel subsidy removal, naira devaluation, and rising insecurity, many opposition figures are aligning with the ruling party, rather than rallying behind coalition efforts led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Apart from the defection of Nasir El-Rufai to the SDP, APC has been the main beneficiary of the recent political shifts.
A serving governor, several lawmakers, and a growing number of former officials have moved to the APC. Sources claim this is part of a broader strategy to bolster President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
