At least 20 people have died after a flood submerged many houses in Mokwa, Niger State, following heavy rainfall and a dam collapse. Residents and officials call for urgent government intervention and flood mitigation efforts.

At least 20 people were killed after a flood submerged many houses in Mokwa, a commercial town in Niger State, on Thursday. The flood followed a midnight downpour that lasted more than five hours. Residents blamed the disaster on the collapse of a small dam near New Bussa, close to the Kainji Lake Dam.

“Many of those bodies were discovered around nearby bushes in Mokwa,” resident Umar Yunus said. “Many people are still missing.”

Multiple sources confirmed the Ilorin-Mokwa highway was closed due to the incident.

Mokwa Local Government Chairman, Jibril Muregi, extended “heartfelt condolences” and urged the Niger State Government and emergency agencies to deploy immediate relief. He called for expedited construction of waterways to reduce future flood risks.
