IPOB has declared its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, a prisoner of conscience and accused the Nigerian state of weaponising the judiciary.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a prisoner of conscience, urging the Nigerian government and international community to recognise his continued detention as unlawful and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB accused the Nigerian state of using “bogus charges” and “judicial terrorism” to suppress Kanu’s self-determination efforts.

“We call on Nigerians, the international community, and all lovers of justice to heed this clarion call: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no case to answer,” the statement read. “The continued persecution of our Leader is not only a gross violation of his fundamental rights but also an indictment of Nigeria’s judiciary.”

Powerful alleged that the terrorism charges were fabricated after treason charges were struck out by former Attorney General Abubakar Malami. He called Kanu’s prosecution “an assault on justice, truth, and the rule of law,” adding: “IPOB is not begging for mercy; we demand justice.”
