“Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad? And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that,”she said.

Former First Lady Maryam Abacha has dismissed claims that her late husband, General Sani Abacha, stole public funds, challenging critics to provide evidence during a TVC interview marking 27 years since his death.

Defending the ex-military ruler’s legacy, Maryam questioned the narrative of recovered “Abacha loot”: “Who is the witness? Did you see the signature or evidence?” She accused Nigerians of selective memory, noting: “The monies my husband kept for Nigeria vanished in months.” The government has repatriated $3.6bn from foreign accounts since 1999.

The widow blamed ethnic and religious bias for persistent allegations, urging national unity: “Why are we so bad towards each other?… All these wahala should stop.” She also denied Abacha’s involvement in annulling the June 12 election.
