Anagbe’s testimony before the U.S. Congress has drawn threats against him, with reports suggesting retaliation from Nigerian authorities.
Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of Makurdi Diocese, in central Nigeria, has warned of escalating jihadist violence targeting Christian communities. Speaking after several deadly attacks by Fulani militants and Boko Haram, Anagbe stressed, “what has been happening in my village and diocese is nothing short of terror attacks on innocent villagers in order to seize their lands and occupy.” The violence has displaced thousands, with attacks becoming more frequent.
In May, Father Solomon Atongo was shot, and over 20 people were killed in Aondona village. Anagbe’s testimony before the U.S. Congress has drawn threats against him, with reports suggesting retaliation from Nigerian authorities. “The world must learn from past mistakes, [the Holocaust] and most recently the Rwandan genocide,” Anagbe urged. “If the world does not rise up now, it may wake up one day to casualties that make the Rwandan genocide a child’s play.”
