“The state of the nation is depressing as the economy and security are at an all-time low,” Obi said. “Even key indicators for measuring national progress like health care, education and production are in shambles.”
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that Nigeria is “losing its soul” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing worsening insecurity, economic collapse, and a growing mental health crisis. Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on June 12 to mark Democracy Day, Obi accused the government of failing to protect citizens or meet basic needs.
“The state of the nation is depressing as the economy and security are at an all-time low,” Obi said. “Even key indicators for measuring national progress like health care, education and production are in shambles.”
He lamented that while politicians celebrated June 12 in comfort, millions of Nigerians faced hunger, fear, and despair. “In many rural communities, farming is no longer safe. Insecurity has pushed us into a full-blown food emergency,” he stated, adding, “The World Health Organisation released a report saying over 20 million Nigerians have mental health issues.”
