The organisers said the goal is to highlight “two years of misrule, hardship, and insecurity” under President Bola Tinubu.

The main gate of the National Assembly complex in Abuja was barricaded on Thursday by security operatives to prevent access by June 12 protesters. The demonstrators, led by the Take It Back Movement and various civil society groups, gathered to protest “two years of misrule, hardship, and insecurity” under President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly as part of Democracy Day celebrations. Protesters, however, say the venue is also a legitimate space for civil expression.

“That we earlier said the protest would hold at Eagle Square doesn’t foreclose the fact that Nigerians cannot organise themselves at the National Assembly,” said Juwon Sanyaolu, the movement’s national coordinator. “The unprecedented hardship and insecurity we have experienced under his government are alarming.”
