MINNA — The Niger State Government says over 700 people remain missing after catastrophic flooding struck Mokwa Local Government Area, describing the event as a “national disaster.”

Governor Umaru Bago, represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, made this known on Tuesday during a condolence visit from Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to Gen. Sani Abacha, and his delegation.

“Over 700 persons are still missing, and we are yet to ascertain where they are. The flooding has caused extensive damage,” Garba said. He confirmed that 207 people had been found dead and over 3,000 households displaced.

In total, 400 houses were damaged, 283 homes completely destroyed, and 50 shops lost in the disaster.

Al-Mustapha expressed sympathy with the victims and pledged solidarity: “We are here to register our condolences over the flood incident that happened in Mokwa. We will meet with the traditional council… and pray that the incident doesn’t happen again,” he said.
