Police clarify viral video of schoolgirl smoking cannabis – say she’s from Zimbabwe, not Nigeria

The viral video features voices speaking Shona, a language common in Zimbabwe.

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that a viral video showing a schoolgirl smoking cannabis did not originate from Nigeria, but Zimbabwe. This was disclosed on Thursday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, who urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.

“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a deeply concerning video currently circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, depicting a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis, surrounded and cheered on by her classmates,” Adejobi said.

Preliminary investigations indicated that “multiple indicators” pointed to Zimbabwe as the video’s origin. The language spoken — English and Shona — along with the lack of Nigerian accents, supported the finding.

“Furthermore, the original upload of the video was accompanied by a caption written in Shona… on the Instagram channel @rusape_celebs_tv,” he added.

The Police warned the public to be cautious in disseminating sensitive, unverified content that could harm reputations or communities.
