With NNPC’s ₦210tn scandal exposed, Obi says, “No documentation. No accountability. No consequences.”
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Nigeria as a “crime scene” following revelations of ₦210 trillion in financial irregularities in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Obi said: “It is with the utmost sadness that I once again reaffirm what I have consistently said: Nigeria has become a crime scene.”
A Senate audit of NNPC’s accounts from 2017 to 2023 uncovered ₦103 trillion in “accrued expenses” and ₦107 trillion in unaccounted “receivables.”
Obi noted that Nigeria’s total national budget in that same period amounted to just ₦88.01 trillion — less than half the disputed sum.
“This is a criminal institutionalised betrayal of the Nigerian people and a grave threat to the future of the society our children will live in,” Obi warned.
He added, “This criminality masquerading as governance must be stopped and dismantled for a better Nigeria.”
The NNPC has yet to respond publicly to the audit findings.
