The Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is facing backlash after arranging a luxury retreat in Kigali, Rwanda, just days after the Senate questioned over ₦210 trillion in unexplained financial discrepancies. Sources told SaharaReporters that five private jets, allegedly coordinated by Abdullahi Bashir-Haske—son-in-law to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar—will fly board members to the Kigali Marriott Hotel, fully booked for the event.
“Instead of addressing serious allegations brought forth by the Nigerian Senate regarding its audited accounts… the NNPC board is preparing to travel to Kigali,” a source said.
Critics argue the trip, estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, reflects misplaced priorities during Nigeria’s economic hardship.
“There’s nothing strategic about this trip,” an oil industry insider stated.
Attempts to reach NNPC’s communications chief, Femi Soneye, were unsuccessful. The Senate, meanwhile, continues to demand accountability for the unexplained trillions in the audit.
