Iranian officials are reportedly discussing the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel on the country’s nuclear facilities, The Atlantic reported on Sunday.
Two sources involved in the discussions said the airstrikes have triggered high-level internal debates in Tehran about the future of Iran’s leadership. One source told The Atlantic, “Ours is just one idea. Tehran is now full of such plots. They are also talking to Europeans about the future of Iran. Everybody knows Khamenei’s days are numbered. Even if he stays in office, he won’t have actual power.”
The strikes have intensified scrutiny of the Supreme Leader’s role as Iran faces international isolation and domestic instability. The conversations reflect rising uncertainty within Iran’s political elite and potential shifts in power dynamics amid ongoing military and diplomatic pressures following the latest phase of conflict with Israel and the United States.
