This enforcement is part of heightened 2025 entry protocols aimed at tightening border security.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has confirmed that visas found to be physically damaged may be immediately revoked, even if still valid. This enforcement is part of heightened 2025 entry protocols aimed at tightening border security.
A CBP spokesperson said, “Documents that are torn, scratched, warped, or have failed biometric chips will not be accepted at ports of entry.” Nearly 80% of recent visa cancellations were due to visible damage such as cracks or wear from wallets, officials revealed.
While CBP retains broad authority to deny entry for any reason, the 2025 policy particularly targets poor document condition. Travellers must reapply through the standard visa process — DS-160, fees, and interviews — if their card is deemed unreadable.
Visa holders are advised to check their documents under white light and store them in rigid holders. “A flawless card doesn’t guarantee entry,” CBP warns, “but a damaged one guarantees trouble.”
