The popular encrypted messaging app WhatsApp is working on a brand new feature that will let you edit your messages after you send them.

If you’ve ever sent a message intended for someone else, or written something in anger and regretted it, the much-awaited ‘edit’ button could be your saviour.

According to WhatsApp experts at WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing the feature as part of its beta programme which regularly trials and tests new tools.

Screenshots show that an ‘edit’ button will appear in the list of options alongside ‘Info’ and ‘Copy’, although it’s unclear when or if the feature will be rolled out to every WhatsApp user in future.

Writers at WABetaInfo said: “WhatsApp is developing a new option that will let us edit text messages, so we will finally be able to fix any typo after sending a message.

“Probably there won’t be an edit history to check previous versions of edited messages […] In addition, details about the time window to let people edit their messages are unknown at the moment.”

If fully released, the new feature would follow the addition of emoji message reactions to WhatsApp chats.

As with many other features on the WhatsApp beta programme, the edit button is currently in an experimental phase and may never see the light of the day.
