Messi has acquired three assists in his six appearances to date at this year’s World Cup.
His first came in the 2-0 group stage victory over Mexico on November 26, laying it off for Enzo Fernandez to curl in Argentina’s second goal of the game.
The assist saw Messi become the first player in history to register an assist at five World Cups, following his exploits in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
The Argentine magician then worked his magic in the quarter-final against the Netherlands, producing a sublime through ball for Nahuel Molina to latch onto and open the scoring.
His pivotal part in Argentina’s first goal saw him draw level with Pele for the highest number of assists in the knockout rounds of the World Cup with six.
Messi’s third assist was produced in the semi-final win over Croatia, which saw him pick up the ball just inside Argentina’s half, twist and turn around Josko Gvardiol before then picking out Julian Alvarez in the six-yard box.
