Airport workers made a gruesome discovery last week when they inspected a package passing through customs.
Authorities discovered four human skulls on Friday (December 30). The couriered cardboard box was stopped and inspected at Queretaro Intercontinental Airport in central Mexico.
According to a statement from the National Guard, the four skulls were wrapped in tin foil and placed inside the cardboard box.
The shocking shipment was sent from one of the most violent areas of Mexico – the western coastal state of Michoacan.
According to the New York Post, the human remains were headed for an address in Manning, South Carolina .
So far, the National Guard has given no additional information about the human remains.
No identifying information has been confirmed, including the age or identity of the remains.
Though they did confirm that in order to send human remains through the post, the sender must have a special permit from a competent health authority.
In this case, no permit was obtained.
In 2022 a human skull was listed for sale on the Facebook marketplace, prompting concern over whether or not it’s legal to buy and sell bones.
Buying and selling human remains isn’t actually illegal in the UK, as long as the body parts sold aren’t used for transplants and are used only for decoration.
