Whether you speak complete gibberish, or create wacky conversations, there is no denying that sleep talking can be a funny thing – but why exactly do some people unconsciously chatter on into the late hours?
While sleeping next to a chatterbox can be annoying, it’s actually a very common occurrence that is not usually considered a medical problem.
In fact, around two in three people talk in their slumber at some point, explains sleep scientist Theresa Schnorbach.
Known officially as somniloquy, sleep talking is a type of parasomnia – or abnormal sleep activity.
Theresa told The Sun: “It’s usually harmless, but could potentially indicate a more significant sleep disorder or health problem.”
The expert, who is working with Emma – The Sleep Company , added that sleep talking can take place during both REM and non-REM sleep, and can range from small murmurings to whole discussions with no recall.
She said: “Generally, sleep talking during the earlier non-REM stages can be easier to understand, whereas during later stage non-REM and REM sleep, sleep talking can sound more like moans and groans.
