In a tweet on February 5, Sam Omatseye, a Nigerian journalist and perceived supporter of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, described Mamman Daura, former editor, New Nigerian Newspaper, as the head of an Aso rock cabal.

Omatseye, to give a pictorial description of an image he included in the tweet, said Daura was dishing out directives to Godwin Emefiele, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria.

He also described Daura as one of those working tirelessly to ensure his principal, Tinubu, did not become the president of Nigeria.

Omatseye also said that Daura, who is President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, had, with other cabal members, been using the president’s name to carry out shady deals.

It turned out Omatseye had erroneously used a portrait of the late Ismaila Isa Funtua, a minister in the second republic, instead of Daura’s in his tweet.

The error earned Omatseye a lot of criticism from Twitter users, with many rebuking him for attacking the “elder statesman” unnecessarily.

It is clear the journalist used the wrong picture, but was there any error in his description of Daura?

Daura has been a prominent figure in the country’s politics since Buhari grabbed power in 2015. He has also been consistently described as a major figure in the Kaduna Mafia, a loose group of Kaduna State-based businessmen, civil servants, intellectuals and military officers who play major roles in the country’s policymaking.
